In English

Japan's core consumer price index (excluding fresh food) for September rose 2.1% from a year earlier, up from 1.7% in August and above 2% for the first time in nine months (since December 2025), the Ministry of Internal Affairs (総務省) said on Oct 23. Food excluding fresh food rose 2.9%, with prepared food, eating out and sweets standing out. Green tea jumped 33.8% (the highest since comparable data began in 1971, as strong matcha demand has cut green-tea output, per Nikkei), saury (サンマ) 27.8%, toilet paper 17.8% and mobile phones 10.9%. Higher hotel rates and the end of Tokyo's free basic water fee also pushed prices up. On the other hand, rice, which soared last year, fell 20.6%, the biggest drop since comparable data began in 1971, and energy fell 0.6% thanks to government subsidies.
