In English

At Skate Canada International in Kelowna on Nov 1, 18-year-old Mao Shimada, a third-year high school student in Aichi, won the women's title in her very first senior Grand Prix event. She scored 235.44 points (short program 82.11, free skate 153.33, landing a triple axel), and her short, free and total were all the season's world-best scores. She is the fourth Japanese woman to win on her GP debut, after Rika Kihira, Rinka Watanabe and Ami Nakai. Saki Miyake was 4th. Shimada, a four-time world junior champion, has now won 21 international events in a row. She couldn't compete at February's Milan-Cortina Olympics because the skating union raised the senior age limit to 17, and she was 16 on the cutoff date (Kyodo via Asahi, Chunichi Sports, AP).
