In English
On Nov 5, Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs said a UNESCO evaluation body had recommended adding Japanese calligraphy (shodo) to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (“Inscribe”). A formal decision is due at the 21st intergovernmental committee in Xiamen, China (Nov 30–Dec 5), with listing reviews expected Dec 1–3. If approved, it would be Japan’s 24th intangible cultural heritage listing. Shodo was already registered as a national intangible cultural property in 2021; the government has been seeking UNESCO listing since 2024 (Bunka-cho, Kyodo, Nikkei, NHK).
